QUEZON PROVINCE IS THE TOP CORN PRODUCER IN CALABARZON FOR THE FOURTH QUARTER OF 2019 Quezon produced 28,055 metric tons of corn during the fourth quarter of 2019. It remains as the top producer of corn in CALABARZON region accounting for 62.6 percent of the region’s total production of 44,796 metric tons. Batangas followed with 11,316 metric tons (25.3%), then Laguna with 2,752 metric tons (6.1%). Cavite contributed 1,484 metric tons (3.3%), while Rizal has the total share of 1,189 metric tons (2.7%). CORN PRODUCTION Corn production in Quezon decreased by 37.3 percent with 28,055 metric tons in the fourth quarter of 2019 from the 44,733 metric tons produced in the same period of 2018. By crop type, white corn production was 5,620 metric tons. This figure was 47.4 percent lower than the produced in the same quarter of 2018 at 10,678 metric tons. Likewise, the production of yellow corn at 22,435 metric tons was down by 34.1 percent compared to the 34,055 metric tons produced in the fourth quarter of 2018. AREA HARVESTED The area harvested for corn in Quezon during the fourth quarter of 2019 was estimated at 10,909 hectares. This was 27.3 percent lower than the recorded 15,015 hectares during the same quarter of 2018. By crop type, harvest area for white corn was 4,544 hectares, lower by 32.0 percent than the harvest area during the fourth quarter of 2018 at 6,679 hectares. Similarly, the harvest area for yellow corn went down by 23.6 percent during the reference quarters.
