Number of children 5 to 17 years old was highest in CALABARZON     As of October 2022, CALABARZON recorded the largest population of children 5 to 17 years old among the regions that was estimated at 4.3 million. It decreased from 4.4 million in October 2021. National Capital Region and Central Luzon had the second and third highest number of children 5 to 17 years old recorded at 3.5 million and 3.3 million, respectively. On the other hand, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) had the lowest population of children 5 to 17 years old estimated at 522 thousand.   In 2022, total number of children 5 to 17 years old in the Philippines was estimated at 31.7 million. The share of the regional total was at 13.7 percent, which means that nearly 14 in every 100 children 5 to 17 years resided in the region.     The Working Children   Working children refers to population aged 5 to 17 years who worked for at least one hour during the past 12 months prior to the survey.     In the Philippines, working children was higher among boys compared to girls in 2022. Of the 1,478 thousand working children, 868 thousand were boys while 610 thousand were girls, giving a ratio of about 142 working boys for every 100 working girls. Majority of the working children belonged to age group 15 to 17 years of age accounting for 59.7 percent of the total working children in 2022. By industry group, most of the working children were engaged in the Agriculture sector, followed by the Services sector and Industry sector. (Table 1)   In addition, though not shown, the proportion of working children 5 to 17 years old in 2022 (4.7 percent) was also higher than the proportion in 2021 (4.3 percent).     Working children in the region was at 3.8 percent   Of the estimated 4.3 million children 5 to 17 years old in CALABARZON for the year 2022, 164 thousand or 3.8 percent were working. This was higher than the proportion in 2021 which was estimated at 3.1 percent. (Summary statistics)     Most of the working children were in Northern Mindanao (12.8 percent).  While CAR recorded the lowest number of working children with share of 1.3 percent of the total.   Child laborers in CALABARZON decreased in 2022   The total number of working children considered engaged in child labor in 2022 was estimated at about 828 thousand in the Philippines.  There was a decline in the number of child laborers in the country from 935 thousand in 2021 to around 828 thousand in 2022.   For the region, children engaged in child labor was about 48 thousand. It decreased by 26.1 percent (from 74.4 thousand in 2021 to 48.3 thousand in 2022).  Moreover, barely one third (29.5 percent) of the working children in the region were engaged in child labor in 2022.   Child laborers are children 5 to 17 years of age engaged in hazardous work identified in the DOLE Administrative Order No. 149 or long working hours only. Meanwhile, hazardous labor or work involves exposure to environmental hazards such as physical hazards (e.g., noise, temperature or humidity, slip, trip of fall hazards, etc.), chemical hazards (e.g. dust, mist, fumes or vapor, liquid, etc.) and biological hazards (e.g. bacterial, fungal, viral, parasitic, etc.)   Highlights The population of children aged 5 to 17 years old in 2022 in the region was estimated at 4.3 thousand. This estimate was lower than the total number of children 5 to 17 years of age in 2021 at 4.4 thousand. Working children in 2022 was estimated at 3.8 percent of the 4.3 thousand children 5 to 17 years old. The share to the total was higher than 3.1 percent share in 2021.
