The headline inflation in Batangas increased further to 6.8 percent in June 2022 from 6.3 percent in May 2022. This is the highest inflation recorded since January 2019. Inflation in June 2021 was lower at 3.7 percent. The average inflation for the first six months of the year stood at 5.2 percent. (Table 1 and Figure 1) The increase in the province’s inflation was mainly brought about by the higher annual increase in the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages, 7.9 percent, alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 10.3 percent, and transport, 17.1 percent. The following commodity groups also contributed to the upward trend of the headline inflation during the month: A. Health, 7.2 percent B. Recreation, Sport and Culture, 1.0 percent On the contrary, the annual mark-up in the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, and personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services, decelerated at 7.0 percent and 1.8 percent, respectively. The rest of the commodity groups retained their previous month’s inflation rates. (Table 4) Meanwhile, inflation for food in Batangas rose further to 8.4 percent in June 2022 from 7.3 percent in May 2022. In June 2021, food inflation was lower at 3.8 percent. (Table 7) The acceleration in the food inflation was primarily influenced by the higher annual growth in vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses at 32.6 percent. Also, contributing to the uptrend in the food inflation was corn and fruits and nuts food group which registered an inflation rate of 4.3 percent and 5.7 percent from - 1.3 percent and –2.0 percent in the previous month. In addition, lower annual increased were recorded in the following food groups: A. rice, 4.2 percent B. Flour, Bread and Other Bakery Products, Pasta Products, and Other Cereals 6.1 percent D. Meat and Other Parts of Slaughtered Land Animals 3.4 percent E. Milk, Other Dairy Products and Eggs, 5.6 percent F. Ready –made food and other food products N.E.C, 5.4 percent The indices for fish and other seafood at 10.6 percent, oils and fats, 52.5 percent and sugar, confectionery and desserts, 11.8 percent registered an annual decline. (Table 5)
