QUEZON PROVINCE IS THE SECOND TOP PALAY PRODUCER IN CALABARZON FOR THE SECOND QUARTER OF 2019 Quezon was the second top palay producing province in CALABARZON in the second quarter of 2019. It produced 44,771 metric tons of palay comprising 35.9 percent of the total regional output of 124,857 metric tons. Laguna was the top palay producer in the region with 51.4 percent share (64,186 MT). Cavite with 5.2 percent share (6,527 MT) followed by Rizal with 4.7 percent share (5,867 MT) and Batangas with 2.8 percent share (3,506 MT). PALAY PRODUCTION Quezon produced 44,771 metric tons of palay in the second quarter of 2019, a decrease of 21.2 percent compared with the same quarter in 2018 (56,813 metric tons). By ecosystem, palay production in irrigated farms was 30,623 metric tons. This figure was 15.0 percent lower compared with the 36,031 metric tons produced in the same quarter of 2018. Likewise, production in rainfed areas went down by 32.0 percent from 20,672 metric tons recorded in the second quarter of 2018 to 14,063 metric tons in the same period of 2019. Production in upland farms also dropped by 22.7 percent from the 110 metric tons posted in the last quarter of 2018 to 85 metric tons produced in the same cropping season of 2019. YIELD PER HECTARE The average yield of palay per hectare in Quezon province decreased by 16.9 percent in the second quarter of 2019. The provincial average went down to 2.94 metric tons from 3.54 metric tons per hectare in the same period in 2018. The yield in irrigated areas was posted at 3.46 metric tons, a decrease of 12.2 percent from the 3.94 metric tons per hectare for the same reference period. Likewise, the yield in rainfed and upland areas also decreased by 26.2 percent and 23.1 percent, respectively.
