QUEZON PROVINCE IS THE TOP PALAY PRODUCER IN CALABARZON FOR THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2019 Quezon was the top palay producing province in CALABARZON in the first quarter of 2019. It produced 38,203 metric tons of palay comprising 45.5 percent of the total regional output of 83,942 metric tons. Laguna came next with 28.1 percent share (23,567 MT) followed by Batangas with 15.1 percent share (12,715 MT). Cavite and Rizal shared 6.9 percent (5,774 MT), and 4.4 percent (3,683 MT), respectively. PALAY PRODUCTION Despite being the top producer in the region, Quezon’s production decreased by 16.9 percent compared with the same quarter in 2018 (45,954 metric tons). By ecosystem, palay production in irrigated farms was 22,049 metric tons. This figure was 11.9 percent lower compared with the 25,041 metric tons produced in the same quarter of 2018. Likewise, production in rainfed areas went down by 22.6 percent from 20,879 metric tons recorded in the first quarter of 2018 to 16,154 metric tons in the same period of 2019. AREA HARVESTED The total harvest area for palay was estimated at 13,496 hectares. It slightly went up by 0.1 percent from 13,488 hectares in the first quarter of 2018. In irrigated palay farms, harvest area decreased by 2.9 percent from 6,667 hectares in the first quarter of 2018 to 6,475 hectares in the same period of 2019. In contrast, harvest area for rainfed palay posted a 3.3 percent increase from 6,796 hectares to 7,021 hectares for the same reference period being compared. There was no harvest area reported in upland farms during first quarter of 2019.
