The headline inflation in Laguna decrease to 3.4 percent in September 2023 from 3.6 percent in August 2023. Moreover, this is lower than the recorded inflation rate in the same month of September 2022 at 4.8 percent. The average inflation rate for the twelve months of the year stood at 4.4 percent. (Table A and Figure 1)

The slowdown of province’s inflation was primarily due to the lower annual increment recorded in the indices of Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels at 4.2 percent in September 2023 from 5.2 percent in August 2023; Restaurant and Accommodation Services at 4.0 percent from 5.2 percent; Personal Care and Miscellaneous Goods and Services at 3.7 percent from 3.8 percent; Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent; Recreation, Sport and Culture at 2.7 percent from 2.8 percent; and Education Services at -3.3 percent from -1.5 percent.

Meanwhile, increase on inflation was recorded in the indices of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages at 6.7 percent in September 2023 from 6.4 percent in August 2023; Clothing and Footwear at 1.9 percent from 1.8 percent; and Transport at -5.0 percent from -5.9 percent.

The rest of the commodity groups either retained their previous month’s inflation rates or had zero percent annual growths. (Table B)

The increase in inflation for Food Index was mainly brought by Rice at 11.2 percent in September 2023 from 5.8 percent in August 2023; Vegetables, Tubers, Cooking Bananas and Pulses at 42.9 percent from 41.3 percent; Fruits and Nuts at 8.5 percent from 7.1 percent; Oils and Fats at -2.6 percent from -3.1 percent; and Corn at 5.8 percent from 1.4 percent.

Meanwhile, slowdown in inflation was observed in the indices of Fish and Other Seafood at 5.8 percent in September from 5.8 percent in August 2023; Milk and Other Dairy Products and Eggs at 7.8 percent in August 2023 from 8.3 percent; Sugar, Confectionery and Desserts at 9.1 percent from 12.2 percent; Ready-Made Food and Other Food Products N.E.C at 5.0 percent from 5.2 percent; Meat and Other Slaughtered Land Animals at -1.6 percent from -1.4 percent; and Flour Bread and Other Bakery Products at 5.5 percent from 6.1 percent.
