The Philippine Statistics Authority Regional Statistical Services Office IV-A disseminated the demographic and health statistics of CALABARZON sourced from the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS). The results of the 2022 NDHS is composed of information on fertility, fertility preferences, family planning practices, childhood mortality, maternal and child health and nutrition, knowledge and attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS, violence against women, child discipline, early childhood development, COVID-19 awareness, and other health issues. Based on the 2022 NDHS, total fertility rate (TFR) for the region was at 1.8 children per woman, which is below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman.  OIC-RD Marilyn F. Ogaya of the Commission on Population and Development (formerly POPCOM) shared that it is good that it is declining and it’s likely due to the increase in family planning (FP) users, decrease in unmet need for FP and strengthened implementation of policies and programs on the Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning and the Adolescent Health and Development.  However, we should also look into the possible effect of the restrictions during COVID-19 pandemic which might have a great effect on the result.  In addition, infant mortality rate (IMR) and under-five mortality rate (U-5MR) in the region was at 19 and 26 deaths per 1,000 births. Over the last two decades, IMR and U-5MR had been declining.  Ms. Noreen Ada of the Department of Health identified their programs, that include Basic Emergency Management Obstetrics and Newborn Care Skills and Training Course, E-Turo session on maternal and child health services among others to address the concerns of the mother and child starting from pregnancy until its delivery.  On violence against women, about nine percent of women 15-49 years in the whole country agreed to wife beating when she neglects children, argues with her husband/partner among other reasons. The estimate for the region was at six percent. Deputy Executive Director for Operations Maria Kristine Josefina G. Balmes from the Philippine Commission on Women shared that their agency come up and advocate for policies that address the plight of women (and men).  She mentioned that violence still persists in our culture, perspectives and behavior.  They will utilize the results for the formulation of the national action plan to end violence against women and sustain information and awareness campaigns on RA 9262 and other related laws. Lastly, Regional Director Agnes E. Tolentino of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) IV-A said that the results of the survey will be the basis for the health and related programs that will be implemented stated in the Regional Development Plan and other development plans of the region. She mentioned that in order to maintain low fertility rate there is a need to intensify health literacy campaigns among adolescents and families, promote health education programs and activities and address unmet need for FP.  With the lower TFR and slower population growth, we would have more working age population which could lead to (us) reaching the demographic sweet spot (demographic dividend). The data dissemination forum was held on July 11, 2023 in Calamba City, Laguna and live at PSA RSSO IV-A official facebook page. The forum was attended by representatives from various Regional Line Agencies, local government units, academe and partners from the media.  Regional Director Charito C. Armonia and Chief Statistical Specialist Benigno F. Perido of PSA IV-A has nothing but gratitude to all the personnel who took part for the successful conduct of the 2022 NDHS particularly to the field interviewers and supervisors for their hard work and dedication during the data collection period.
