The total inventory of Livestock and Poultry in the province of Rizal as of April 1, 2023 reached 3,016,052 heads which was 17.0 percent or 438,363 heads higher than the recorded inventory last April 1, 2022. In terms of population by sector, poultry had a higher contribution in the inventory with a total of 2,907,923 heads. The large number of poultry was attributed to layer chicken with a total of 1,611,247 heads. On the other hand livestock inventory as of April 1, 2023 was posted at 108,129 heads. For the poultry sector, the inventory of layer chicken had the major share in the overall inventory of poultry in the province as of April 1, 2023 contributing 55 percent, while broiler, native/improved and duck shared only 43 percent, 1 percent and 1 percent, respectively. (Figure 1) Compared with the inventory of the first quarter of 2022, livestock inventory increased by 24.9 percent while poultry sector had an increase of 16.7 percent. Further, the overall increase was posted at 17.0 percent. The largest increase was observed in the inventory of swine which posted an addition of 36.2 percent or 22,476 heads. (Table 1) Livestock slaughtered in slaughterhouses in the province for the 1 st quarter of 2023 was 107,196 heads, 41.8 percent higher than the previous year with 31,621 heads. Slaughtered swine contributed a big increase of 45.5 percent or 32,548 heads. Meanwhile, the number of cattle and carabao slaughtered decreased by 6.8 percent and 72.0 percent, respectively as seen in Table 2. TECHNICAL NOTES The Performance Report of Livestock and Poultry presents the performance situation in terms of inventory of carabao, cattle, goat, swine, and by type of chicken and volume of slaughtered/ dressed in the slaughterhouses and poultry dressing plants in the province of Rizal. Moreover, data for this special release were collected by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) through the two (2) major surveys namely: a) The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) which is conducted quarterly and covers household with livestock and/or poultry raising activities and b) The Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS), conducted in all provinces covering cattle, carabao, swine, goat, and sheep for livestock while chicken, chicken eggs, duck, and duck eggs for poultry commodities. Another survey that supplements the data requirements of the livestock and poultry sector is the Compilation of Data from Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plants (CDSPDP). This is done monthly and utilized administrative data from Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRMEs) in the province which is in coordination with the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), Meat Inspectors (MI’s) and the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS). Production – refers to the volume of indigenous (locally-raised) animals disposed for slaughter which include animals exported or shipped-out for slaughter (in “head” and in “liveweight equivalent”). Livestock – farm animals that are kept or raised for consumption, work, or leisure. For purposes of census and surveys, livestock covers only those that are tended and raised by an operator. Poultry – a collective term for all domesticated avian for the purpose of food consumption or, the carcass of such avian dressed/ processed for human consumption. Animal Inventory (also, Animal Population) – the number of domesticated animals in head present in the farm at specific reference date. Backyard Farm/ Raiser – refers to any farm or household raising at least one head of animal or bird and does not qualify as a commercial farm. Commercial Livestock / Poultry Farm Operator – refers to any operator or farm which operation satisfies at least one of the following conditions: for Livestock – a) at least 21 heads of adults and zero young, b) at least 41 heads of young animals, c) at least 10 heads of adults and 22 heads of young animals; for Poultry – a) 500 layers or 1,000 broilers, b) 100 layers and 100 broilers if raised in combination, and c) 100 heads of duck regardless of age.
