In February 2022, inflation was lower at 2.6 percent. The average inflation rate for the first two months of the year stood at 8.4 percent. (Table A and Figure 1)   Table B. Also contributing to the downtrend in the overall inflation during the period were the lower annual increments in the indices of the following: food and non-alcoholic beverages at 11.2 percent; restaurants and accommodation services at 5.4 percent; and information and communication at 0.1 percent; Meanwhile, annual upticks increased in the indices of the following commodity groups as compared to their previous month’s inflation rates: alcoholic beverages  and tobacco at 11.8 percent; clothing and footwear at 4.5 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels at 8.9 percent; furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance at 4.7 percent; health at 3.7 percent; and recreation, sport and culture at 4.1 percent. The rest of the commodity groups either retained their previous month’s inflation rates or had zero percent annual growths. (Table B)   Table C. In February 2022, food inflation was lower compared to this year’s inflation, recorded at -1.4 percent. (Table C)   The annual growth rate of the vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses index went down to 43.6 percent during the month, from 51.3 percent in the previous month. Moreover, food groups that exhibited higher annual increments during the month are the following: meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals at 6.4 percent; oils and fats at 11.7 percent; sugar, confectionery and desserts at 33.3 percent; and ready-made food and other food products n.e.c. at 7.8 percent. Meanwhile, food groups that registered acceleration in prices are the following: cereals and cereal products at 6.0 percent; fish and other seafood at 10.2 percent; milk, other dairy products and eggs at 13.2 percent; and fruits and nuts at 9.5 percent. Corn index had higher annual uptick at 17.2 percent while rice index retained its previous month’s inflation rate at 2.8 percent. (Table C)   (sgd.) CHARITO C.
