The headline inflation in Batangas increased further to 6.1 percent in April 2022 from 5.3 percent in March 2022. This is the highest inflation recorded since January 2019. Inflation in April 2021 was lower at 3.9 percent. The average inflation for the first four months of the year stood at 3.4 percent. The increase in the country’s inflation was mainly brought about by the higher annual increase in the index for housing water, electricity, gas and other fuels, 8.4 percent, health, 7.3 percent and transport 13.9 percent. Also, contributing to the uptrend in the overall inflation during the period were the higher annual increments in the indices of the following commodity groups as compared with their previous month’s inflation rates: A. Clothing and Footwear, 2.9 percent B. Maintenance of the House, 2.7 percent C. Information and Communication, 0.7 percent D. Restaurant and Accommodation Services, 6.7 percent E. Personal Care and Miscellaneous Goods and Services, 2.1 percent Meanwhile, annual upticks slowed down in the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, 5.0 percent and alcoholic and beverages and tobacco, 5.7 percent. For education index it retained the previous month’s inflation rates at zero percent . For food index, it increased further by 5.1 percent in April 2022 from 3.0 percent in the previous month. In April 2021, food index was higher by 6.4 percent. The annual growth rate of fruits and nuts went up to 3.0 percent during the month from –2.3 percent in the previous month. In addition, double digit growth rate was observed in oils and fats at 52.0 percent, vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses at 19.7 percent and sugar, confectionery and desserts at 13.0 percent. The following food groups exhibited higher annual increments during the month: A. Rice, 4.2 percent B. Corn, 1.6 percent C. Milk, other dairy products and eggs, 5.1 percent On the other hand, the ready– made food and other food products n.e.c had a lower uptick at 6.3 percent. The meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals and fish other seafood registered an annual decline at –0.2 and 4.2 percent, respectively.
