The economy of City of Lucena grew faster at 7.7 percent in 2022, compared to the 4.3 percent growth in 2021, as all industries posted positive growths. In terms of level, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the City of Lucena reached PhP 46.62 billion, which already surpassed its pre-pandemic level estimated at PhP 46.27 billion in 2019. (Figure 1)

The top three industries with the fastest growth were Other Services which include arts, entertainment and recreational activities, personal services among others, with 23.2 percent; Construction with 21.4 percent; and Mining and quarrying with 20.7 percent. (Figure 2)

In terms of share to the economy of City of Lucena, the combined share of Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, Financial and insurance activities, and Real estate and ownership of dwellings contributed almost 45 percent of the economy of the city in 2022. (Figure 3)

In terms of share to the PhP 2.94 trillion GDP of CALABARZON in 2022, the City of Lucena had the least share of 1.6 percent. Laguna remained the biggest economy in the region accounting for 33.7 percent. The provinces of Cavite and Batangas followed with 24.9 percent and 20.9 percent, respectively.

The 7.73 percent GDP growth of the City of Lucena ranked second among the six economies in CALABARZON region.  Cavite, the only province that surpassed the region’s growth rate, registered the fastest growth of 9.2 percent. (Figure 4)

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) established through Republic Act No. 10625, otherwise known as the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013, is tasked, among others, to compile and maintain macroeconomic accounts and indicators, at the national and subnational level.

The Provincial Product Accounts or PPA has been the mechanism of the PSA to compile the annual estimates of Gross Domestic Product by province/HUC, consistent with the National and Regional Accounts of the Philippines.  In 2023, all provinces and HUC of CALABARZON continue to implement the PPA since its inception in 2021, together with other pilot regions. As of 2023, a total of 82 provinces and  
17 HUCs are compiling the PPA.
