Volume of Fisheries Production
The total volume of fisheries production in Quezon province during the first Quarter of 2024 was estimated at 6,122.83 metric tons. It decreased by 65.3 percent from the 17,658.60 metric tons reported in the same quarter of 2023. This was brought about by the decrease in the output from the commercial subsector (77.7%).
Among the subsectors, production from commercial fisheries contributed the biggest share of 46.9 percent to the total fisheries production during the period. It was followed by the output from municipal fisheries with 41.8 percent. Meanwhile, aquaculture fisheries shared 11.4 percent.
Commercial Fisheries
Production for commercial fisheries was posted at 2,869.65 metric tons, a decrement of 77.7 percent compared to the 12,847.48 metric tons reported in the same quarter in 2023. The top five species that contributed most to the decrease in the total production of this subsector were the decrease in bali sardinella or tamban (1,547.86 MT), roundscad or galunggong (1,125.21 MT), threadfin bream or bisugo (1,081.52 MT), indian mackerel or alumahan (680.85 MT), and squid or pusit (639.40 MT).
Municipal Fisheries
Municipal fisheries production was registered at 2,556.64 metric tons in the First quarter of 2024, lower by 2,040.83 MT compared to the same quarter’s output of 4,597.47 metric tons in the previous year. Of this total volume of production, marine municipal fisheries accounted for 99.64 percent while the rest were caught from inland bodies of water.
The volume of production for marine municipal fisheries resulted to a 44.5 percent decrease from 4,587.06 metric tons in the same quarter of 2023 to 2,547.36 metric tons this quarter of 2024. The leading species that contributed to the decrease in the volume of production comprising marine municipal fisheries were noted in acetes or alamang (330.32 MT), threadfin bream or bisugo (267.92 MT), roundscad or galunggong (240.99 MT), fimbriated sardines or tunsoy (229.49 MT), and indian mackerel or alumahan (207.07 MT).
Inland municipal fisheries production during the First quarter of 2024 was recorded at 9.28 metric tons, lower by 1.13 MT or 10.8 percent from its 2023 same quarter production of 10.41 metric tons. The top species contributing to the decline of the total volume of inland municipal fisheries production was mainly attributed to freshwater shrimp or hipon (2.42 MT) and freshwater crab or talangka (0.53 MT).
Aquaculture
Aquaculture fisheries production for the first quarter of 2024 increased to 696.54 metric tons from 213.65 metric tons during the same period in 2023. The increase in the total aquaculture production was mostly attributed to the increase in milkfish (284.65 MT) harvested from marine cage and brackish water fishpond. Similarly, production of seaweed inclined by 131.53 MT, from 68.34 metric tons to 199.86 metric tons.
