This recorded the same inflation with May 2021. The average inflation for the first five months of the year stood at 3.7 percent. (Table A and Figure 1) Table B. Year-on-Year Changes of the Consumer Price Index in Percent in Region IVA (CALABARZON) by Commodity Group: April – May 2022 In Percent (2018=100) Source: Retail Price Survey of Commodities for the Generation of Consumer Price Index Philippine Statistics Authority The increase in the region’s inflation was mainly brought about by the higher annual increase in the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages at 4.1 percent; transport, 12.4 percent; and alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 7.1 percent. Also contributing to the uptrend in the overall inflation during the period were the higher annual increments in the indices of the following commodity groups as compared with their previous month’s inflation rates: Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, 2.1 Recreation, sport and culture, 1.5 percent; and Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services, 2.8 percent. Meanwhile, annual upticks slowed down in the indices of housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels at 7.0 percent; health at 4.0 percent; and restaurants and accommodation services at 3.0 percent. The rest of the commodity groups either retained their previous month’s inflation rates or had zero percent annual growths. (Table B) Table C. In May 2021, food index was higher at 4.6 percent. (Table C) The annual growth rate of the vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses index went up to 17.3 percent during the month, from 12.2 percent in the previous month. In addition, double-digit growth rate was also observed in oils and fats index at 19.0 percent. The following food groups exhibited higher annual increments during the month: Cereals and cereal products, 2.5 percent; Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals, 2.5 percent; Fish and other seafood, 6.4 percent; Milk, other dairy products, and eggs, 0.7 percent; Sugar, confectionery and desserts, 6.9 percent; and Ready-made food and other food products n.e.c., 3.9 percent. Similarly, the rice index accelerated at 0.9 percent inflation during the month, from 0.7 percent in the previous month. On the other hand, the corn index had a lower annual uptick at 2.5 percent, while the fruits and nuts index still registered an annual decline at -3.7 percent. (Table C) CHARITO C. ARMONIA (sgd.)
