This is the highest recorded inflation since November 2018. Moreover, this is a 1.8-percent index point increase over the recorded inflation rate in the same month of 2021 at 4.1 percent. The average inflation for the first seven months of the year stood at 4.3 percent. (Table A and Figure 1) Table B. Year-on-Year Changes of the Consumer Price Index in Percent in Region IVA (CALABARZON) by Commodity Group: June – July 2022 In Percent (2018=100) Source: Retail Price Survey of Commodities for the Generation of Consumer Price Index Philippine Statistics Authority The increase in the region’s inflation was mainly brought about by the higher annual increase in the index for transport at 16.2 percent; food and non-alcoholic beverages, 5.9 percent; and restaurants and accommodation services, 3.1 percent. Also contributing to the uptrend in the overall inflation during the period were the higher annual increments in the indices of the following commodity groups as compared with their previous month’s inflation rates: Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 8.2 percent; Clothing and footwear, 2.2 percent; Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, 2.8 percent; Recreation, sport and culture, 1.7 percent; and Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services, 2.8 percent. Meanwhile, annual upticks slowed down in the indices of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels at 6.0 percent; health at 3.6 percent; and information and communication at 0.2 percent. The rest of the commodity groups either retained their previous month’s inflation rates or had zero percent annual growths. (Table B) Table C. In July 2021, food index was lower compared to this year’s inflation at 5.3 percent. (Table C) The annual growth rate of the oils and fats index went up to 23.4 percent during the month, from 19.8 percent in the previous month. In addition, double-digit growth rate was also observed in sugar, confectionery and desserts at 13.1 percent and fish and other seafood at 10.6 percent. In addition, food groups exhibited higher annual increments during the month are the following: Cereals and cereal products, 3.5 percent; Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals, 6.2 percent; Milk, other dairy products, and eggs, 3.2 percent; Fruits and nuts, 5.2 percent; and Ready-made food and other food products n.e.c., 5.2 percent. Similarly, the rice index accelerated at 1.8 percent inflation during the month, from 1.5 percent in the previous month. Moreover, the corn index also had higher annual uptick at 17.6 percent. Meanwhile, vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses index slowed down from 18.3 percent in June 2022 to 4.2 percent in July 2022. (Table C) (SGD.) CHARITO C.
