Live births… A total of 2,892 live births were registered in the province in April 2023. It recorded a decline of  31.0 percent from the March 2023 figure of 4,190. Of the total births registered, 50.6 percent were males and 49.4 percent were females. This resulted to a birth sex ratio of 102 males for every 100 females. The daily average of birth occurrences during the month was 96, it is lower than the recorded daily average of 135 in March 2023. Lucena City recorded the highest number of live births with a total of 656 or  22.7 percent of the total births registered in the province. It was followed by Lopez and Candelaria with 206 and 204, respectively, both accounting for 7.1 percent. San Francisco and  Gumaca  came next with 176 or 6.1 percent and 153 or 5.3 percent, respectively. The top five (5) municipalities with the least number of registered births were  Panukulan with six (6) or 0.2 percent, Agdangan with three (3) or 0.1 percent, Perez and Quezon both with two (2) or 0.07 percent, and Plaridel with one (1) or 0.03 percent. Attendant at Birth... The 2,037 (70.4%) birth deliveries were attended to by medically trained personnel such as physicians, nurses and midwives. Among the medically trained personnel, physicians attended to the most number of deliveries with 1,250 or 43.2 percent of the total births registered. The number of birth occurrences delivered by the traditional birth attendants and those without medical training was 855 or 29.6 percent of the total. Five municipalities in the province recorded higher number of live births attended to by traditional birth attendants compared to those attended to by health professionals. These were the municipalities of San Francisco (88.6%), Jomalig (83.3%), San Narciso (72.0%), Burdeos (63.2%) and Buenavista (61.5%). Age-group of mother… Seven (7) in ten (10) births were born to mothers aged 20-34 (2,023 or 70.0%). The number of births born to teenage mothers was 344 or 11.9 percent. A total of 18 births or 0.6 percent were born to mothers at the menopausal age (45 years old and over). Place of Occurrence and Usual Residence of Mother… Majority of the registered births were born to mothers whose usual residence is in Quezon province (2,839 or 98.2%). Only a small percentage of the birth occurrences (53 or 1.8%) were born to mothers whose usual residence is outside Quezon province. Eight (8) out of the 39 municipalities and 2 cities of Quezon province showed a positive difference in the number of births by place of occurrence and the usual place of residence of the mother. This implies that there were mothers who opted to give birth to places where there are available or better health care facilities and social services. The highest positive difference of 295 was reported in Lucena City. This may be attributed to higher number of hospitals and health care facilities located in the city. In contrast, the highest negative difference of 72 was observed in the municipality of Sariaya. This may be explained by its proximity to Lucena City.
