What are Vital Statistics?

Vital Statistics are derived from information obtained at the time when the occurrences of vital events and their characteristics are inscribed in a civil register. 

Vital acts and events are the births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, and all such events that have something to do with an individual's entrance and departure from life together with the changes in civil status that may occur to a person during his lifetime.

Recording of these events in the civil register is known as vital or civil registration and the resulting documents are called vital records.

In this Special Release, sex-aggregated data of the registered live births and deaths in CALABARZON region and its provinces will be presented.

The figures presented in this Special Release are results of actual registration without any adjustment for under-registration.

What is Sex-Disaggregated Data? 


Sex-disaggregated data refers to information that has been broken down or separated based on the biological sex of individuals, typically distinguishing between males and females.

What is Live Birth?

Live Birth is a complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the duration of the pregnancy, which after such separation, breathes or shows any other evidence of life, such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached; each product of such a birth is considered liveborn.

How many babies were born in a year? (p)
 

In 2023, the Philippines recorded a total of 1,213,083 live births, with CALABARZON contributing significantly. Out of this total, CALABARZON accounted for 16.1 percent, equivalent to 195,695 live births.

More Males born than Females in the Philippines (p)
Out of 1,213,083 recorded live births in the Philippines, 52 percent were male, totaling 631,408 births, while 48 percent were female, totaling 581,675 births.

More Males born than Females in CALABARZON (p)
 

Out of 195,695 recorded live births in CALABARZON, 51.9 percent were male, totaling 101,620 births, while 48.1 percent were female, totaling 94,075 births.

Table 1 shows the provisional (p) quantitative data on the Recorded Live Births by Sex* in the Provinces of CALABARZON from January to December 2023.

Figure 1 shows the data to Percentage on the Recorded Live Births by Sex*(p) in the Provinces of CALABARZON from January to December 2023. It illustrates the relationship between the number of male and female births registered in the provinces of CALABARZON from January to December 2023. As seen in the figure presented, more male babies are born in all the provinces in CALABARZON.

DEATH STATISTICS

What is Death?
 

Death is the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth has taken place. It is the permanent cessation of all vital functions necessary to sustain life. This includes the irreversible cessation of heartbeat, respiration, and brain activity. Overall, death represents the end of an individual's biological existence, marking the transition from life to whatever lies beyond, according to various interpretations.

Deaths in CALABARZON (p)
In 2023, the Philippines recorded a total of 593,827 deaths, with CALABARZON contributing significantly. Out of this total, CALABARZON accounted for 15.71 percent equivalent to 93,268 deaths.

More Male Deaths than Female Deaths recorded in the Philippines (p)

Out of 593,827 recorded deaths in the Philippines, 56.6 percent were male, totaling 336,015 deaths, while 43.4 percent were female, totaling 257,812 deaths.


More Male Deaths than Female Deaths recorded in CALABARZON (p)

Out of 93,268 recorded deaths in the CALABARZON, 56.3 percent were male, totaling 52,502 deaths, while 43.7 percent were female, totaling 40,766 deaths.

Figure 2 illustrates the relationship between the number of male deaths and female deaths recorded in the provinces of CALABARZON from January to December 2023 (p).

As seen in the figure presented, in 2023 (p) there are more male deaths recorded in all the provinces in CALABARZON.

The data and figures presented in this special release are PROVISIONAL (p) as of March 31, 2024.
This release includes births of Filipinos whose usual residence is abroad and births of foreign nationals that occurred in the country during the reference period.
This release also includes persons who died in the Philippines whose usual residence is in a foreign country.

There were 1,198 registered deaths in Quezon in February 2024. It recorded a decrease of 22.4 percent from the previous month’s figure of 1,543.
