Volume of Fisheries Production
The total volume of fisheries production in Quezon Province during the year was estimated at 52,178.61 metric tons. It decreased by 16.4 percent from the 62,419.11 metric tons reported in 2022. This was brought about by the decrease in the output from aquaculture (-39.0%) and municipal fisheries (-31.8%). Meanwhile, production from commercial fisheries went up by 73.8 percent.
Among the sub-sectors, production from aquaculture contributed the biggest share of 37.8 percent to the total fisheries production during the year. It was followed by the output from commercial fisheries with 37.6 percent. Meanwhile, municipal fisheries shared only 24.6 percent of the total fisheries production.
Aquaculture
Aquaculture fisheries production for 2023 decreased from 32,314.86 metrics tons to 19,711.70 metric tons. The drop in the total aquaculture production was mainly attributed to the decrement in the production of Milkfish, Mudcrab, and Penaeus vannamei by 6,145.69 MT, 3,883.43 MT, and 1,119.70 MT, respectively. These were caught in brackishwater fishpond.
Municipal Fisheries
Municipal fisheries production was registered at 12,835.65 metric tons in 2023, which was lower by 5,973.16 MT compared to the previous year’s output of 18,808.81 metric tons. Of this total volume of production, marine municipal fisheries accounted for 99.8 percent while the rest were caught from inland bodies of water.
The volume of production for Marine Municipal Fisheries resulted to a 31.7 percent decrease from 18,757.66 metric tons in 2022 to 12,811.04 metric tons in 2023. The leading species that contributed to the decrease in production of marine municipal fisheries were Threadfin bream or Bisugo (3,162.27 MT), Big-eyed tuna or Tambakol/Bariles (1,483.86 MT), Roundscad or Galunggong (759.82 MT), Frigate tuna or Tulingan (630.37 MT), and Goatfish or Saramulyete (476.20 MT).
Inland fisheries production during the year was recorded at 24.61 metric tons, lower by 51.9 percent from its 2022 same quarter production of 51.15 metric tons. The leading species that contributed to the decrement in the total inland municipal fisheries production were Tilapia (13.09 MT), Blue crab or Alimasag (10.04 MT), and Mudfish or Dalag (5.03 MT).
Commercial Fisheries
Production for commercial fisheries was posted at 19,631.26 metric tons, an increment of 73.8 percent compared to the 11,295.44 metric tons reported in 2022. The top five species that contributed to the increase in the total production of this subsector were Bali sardinella or Tamban (1,580.87 MT), Threadfin bream or Bisugo (1,243.65 MT), Yellowfin tuna or Tambakol/Bariles (772.15 MT), Skipjack or Gulyasan (676.18 MT), and Big-eyed scad or Matangbaka (601.66 MT).
