The economy of CALABARZON grew by 4.8 percent in 2016, lower than its 5.8 percent growth in 2015. The deceleration was due to the slower growth of Industry, particularly Manufacturing and Construction.   Industry sustained its largest share to the region’s economy at 61.4 percent.  Services and Agriculture, Hunting, Forestry and Fishing (AHFF) had shares of 33.2 and 5.5 percent, respectively.   Industry grew by 3.7 percent in 2016, lower than its 5.7 percent growth in 2015. Manufacturing slowed down at 3.6 percent compared to its previous year’s growth of 5.5 percent. Construction also posted a slower growth of 2.5 percent, from growth of                 7.2 percent in 2015. Mining and Quarrying (MAQ) declined to 1.8 percent in 2016 as compared to its double-digit growth in 2015 of 17.9 percent. On the other hand, Electricity, Gas and Water Supply (EGWS) grew faster at 7.5 percent, from growth of 6.8 percent the previous year.   Services accelerated at 7.2 percent, from a growth rate of 6.7 percent in 2015. This was driven by the expansions in Financial Intermediation (FI); Public Administration and Defense; Compulsory Social Security (PAD); Real Estate, Renting and Business Activities (RERBA); and Transport, Storage and Communication (TSC) of 8.3, 7.5, 7.2 and 6.3 percent, respectively. Conversely, Other Services (OS) slowed down to 9.6 percent, lower than its growth of 9.7 percent in 2015.  A deceleration was also posted by Trade and Repair of Motor Vehicles, Motorcycles, Personal and Household Goods at 5.7 percent in 2016 compared to    6.9 percent in 2015.   AHFF grew by 3.4 percent in 2016, faster than the 2.6 percent growth in 2015. Agriculture and Forestry triggered the growth in AHFF though it posted a deceleration of 4.7 percent in 2016 since its share in the whole AHFF is 76.8 percent. In 2015, Agriculture and Forestry sub-industry had a higher growth of 5.9 percent. Livestock industry in the region contributed much to the growth in the Agriculture and Forestry sub-industry. On the other hand, Fishing still posted a contraction but at a lower rate of 0.6 percent in 2016. The contraction in 2015 was at 6.6 percent.   Industry and Services both contributed 2.3 percentage points to the region’s overall growth of 4.8 percent. The remaining 0.2 percentage point was from AHFF.     CHARITO C. ARMONIA Regional Director PSA Region IV-A     Note: Percentage share may not add up to 100 percent due to rounding.
