Basic literacy rate of population 5 years old and over by sex, CALABARZON: 2019 Source:  Philippine Statistics Authority, 2019 Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey   The basic literacy of population five years old and over in CALABARZON was posted at 95.5 percent according to the results of the 2019 Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS). It is 1.7 percentage points higher than the basic literacy rate of the country which was 93.8 percent. Females (95.9 percent) had a higher basic literacy than males (95.1 percent). Likewise, females had higher basic literacy than males at the national level with 94.5 percent and 93.2 percent, respectively.   For every 100, 98 of the population aged 10 and over were basic literate   Basic literacy is the ability of a person to read and write with understanding of a simple message in any language or dialect. Table 2 shows the basic literacy of population 10 years old and over from the 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2019 results of FLEMMS. The basic literacy rate of the region in 2019 was 0.9 percentage points higher than the results in 2003. Similarly, 0.9 percentage point increment was observe for both male and female basic literacy rate from 2003 to 2019.   Estimated basic literacy rate in CALABARZON declined from 98.4 percent in 2013 to 98.1 percent in 2019. Likewise, estimates for basic literacy for males and females showed slight decrements in 2019 from 2013.   Table 2. Among urban dwellers, 93.9 percent of population without access to electricity were basic literate. Basic literacy for urban and rural dwellers who had access to electricity was at 95.5 and 96.0 percent, respectively.   Figure 2.
