Quezon was the top palay producing province in CALABARZON in the fourth quarter of 2018. It produced 58,333 metric tons of palay comprising 38.0 percent of the total regional output of 153,400 metric tons. Laguna came next with 27.4 percent share (41,978 MT) followed by Batangas with 15.6 percent share (23,920 MT). Cavite, and Rizal shared 9.8 percent (15,090 MT), and 9.2 percent (14,079 MT), respectively. Despite being the top producer in the region, Quezon’s production slightly decreased by 1.1 percent compared with the same quarter in 2017 (58,999 metric tons). By ecosystem, palay production in irrigated farms was 40,276 metric tons. This figure was 19.7 percent higher compared with the 33,657 metric tons produced in the same quarter of 2017. However, production in rainfed areas went down by 28.5 percent from 25,162 metric tons recorded in the fourth quarter of 2017 to 17,979 metric tons in the same period of 2018. Likewise, production in upland farms dropped by 56.7 percent from the 180 metric tons posted in the last quarter of 2017 to 78 metric tons produced in the same cropping season of 2018.
