Special Release on Fisheries Situation in Laguna, Fourth Quarter 2022 (Preliminary Results)

Fisheries production in Laguna decreased by -36.5% The fourth quarter 2022 fisheries production declined by -36.5 percent or 5,106 metric tons from 8,041 metric tons output of the same quarter a year ago. The decrease is attributed to both aquaculture and inland municipal fisheries. Figure 1. Volume and Value of Fisheries Production, Laguna, October to December: 2021 – 2022p The volume of production from municipal fisheries (inland) dropped by -31.1 percent or 4,246 metric tons this October to December 2022 from the 6,159 metric tons on the same period last year. In addition, a decrease of -54.3 percent was noted relative to aquaculture production during the same quarter of the previous year. Table 1. Volume of Fisheries Production by Subsector, Laguna, October to December: 2021 – 2022p The volume of production from municipal fisheries (inland) contributed 83.2 percent to the total fisheries output in Laguna in the fourth quarter of 2022, while the remaining 16.8 percent was produced from aquaculture. Percent Shares of Municipal Fisheries (Inland) and Aquaculture to Total Production, Laguna, October to December: 2021 - 2022 Snail has the highest share contribution with 70.0 percent among the species from inland municipal fisheries in October to December 2022. It was followed by tilapia with 19.3 percent and milkfish with 5.0 percent. In terms of percent change, milkfish has the highest increase in production from 1 metric ton in the last quarter of 2021 to 214 metric tons in the same quarter of 2022. Table 2. Volume of Production by Species from Inland Municipal Fisheries, Laguna, October – December: 2021 – 2022p In aquaculture, tilapia in freshwater cage has the highest share in total production with 87.0 percent during the reference quarter, followed by carp also in freshwater cage with 12.3 percent. In terms of production, tilapia in freshwater cage decreased by -55.6 percent or 749 metric tons in the last quarter of 2022 from the 1,686 metric tons in the same quarter of the previous year..
