Live births… The total number of live births in Quezon reported for the year 2022 was 46,006. This figure was higher by 8,481 or 22.6 percent from the previous year’s total of 37,525. The daily average of birth occurrences during the year was 126. There were more males (23,662 or 51.4 percent) than females (22,344 or 48.6 percent) registered during the year. This resulted to a birth sex ratio of 106 males for every 100 females. Lucena City recorded the highest number of live births with a total of 11,248 or 24.4 percent of the total births registered in the province. Candelaria (3,338 or 7.3 percent) topped the rest of the municipalities/city in terms of the number of live births. The least number of registered births was observed in the municipalities of Perez (75 or 0.2 percent) and Plaridel (22 or 0.05 percent).   Month of Occurrence... September was the month with the highest number of births with 4,708 while February had the lowest registration of 3,075. In terms of daily average, the month of September recorded the highest figure with 157 births while April had the lowest average of 105 per day. Daily index of more than 100 indicates a daily average higher than the overall figure at the provincial level. Attendant at Birth... The 33,646 (73.1 percent) birth deliveries were attended to by medically trained personnel such as physicians, nurses and midwives. Among the medically trained personnel, physicians attended to the most number of deliveries with 19,173 or 41.7 percent of the total births registered. The number of birth occurrences delivered by the traditional birth attendants and those without medical training was 12,360 or 26.9 percent of the total. By attendant at birth, six (6) municipalities in the province recorded higher number of live births attended to by traditional birth attendants compared to those attended to by health professionals. The municipality of San Francisco (83.3 percent) topped the list of areas with high percentage of birth deliveries attended to by non-health professionals. It was followed by the municipalities of San Narciso (71.2 percent), Patnanungan (68.6 percent), Panukulan (57.7 percent), Buenavista (55.7 percent) and Burdeos (51.0 percent). Age-group of mother… Seven in ten births were born to mothers aged 20-34 (32,669 or 71.0 percent). The number of births born to teenage mothers was 5,715 or 12.4 percent. A total of 231 births or 0.5 percent were born to mothers at the menopausal age (45 years old and over).   Place of Occurrence and Usual Residence of Mother… Majority of the registered births were born to mothers whose usual residence is in Quezon province (44,916 or 97.6 percent). Only a small percentage of the birth occurrences (1,090 or 2.4 percent) were born to mothers whose usual residence is outside of Quezon province. Ten (10) out of the 39 municipalities and 2 cities of Quezon province showed a positive difference in the number of births by place of occurrence and the usual place of residence of the mother. This implies that there were mothers who opted to give birth to places where there are available or better health care facilities and social services. The highest positive difference of 4,705 was reported in Lucena City. This may be attributed to higher number of hospitals and health care facilities located in the city. In contrast, the highest negative difference of 846 was observed in the municipality of Sariaya. This may be explained by its proximity to Lucena City where there are more health care facilities. Legitimacy Status… More than half of the total births registered during the month (31,185 or 67.8 percent) were born illegitimate. The island municipality of Perez (89.3 percent) topped the list of municipalities with high percentage of births with illegitimate status. It was followed by the municipalities of Jomalig (80.0 percent), Alabat and Atimonan, both with  (77.6 percent). By age-group, the highest number of registered live births with illegitimate status was born to mothers aged 20-24 (9,642 or 31.0 percent) followed by those born to mothers aged 25-29 (7,738 or 24.8 percent). Generally, the percentage of babies born illegitimate is inversely proportional to the age group of mothers. The higher the percentage of babies born illegitimate, the younger is the age group to which the mothers belong. Teenage mothers recorded the highest percentage (94.3 percent) of babies born out of wedlock. All of the municipalities and cities of Quezon registered high percentages of births with illegitimate status.     (SGD.) AIRENE A.
