It measures how much on the average, prices of goods and services have increased or decreased from a particular reference period.   CPI for All Items in the region for January 2020 was recorded at 120.9, a 3.5 percent increase over the record set in the same month a year ago at 116.8. Likewise, CPI for All Items in the region during this month is 0.4 percent higher than the figure recorded in December 2019 at 120.4 or an equivalent increase of 0.5 price index.   For areas outside NCR, price index for all items in CALABARZON for January 2020 at 120.9 is positioned second from the lowest quoted CPI which is the Cordillera Administrative Region at 120.5. BARMM still keeps the highest price index at 128.5 during the reported month, higher by 5.9 index points with the national average of 122.6 price index for all items.   Compared with January 2019 record, the region’s CPI for all items during this month rose by 4.1 index points, the same movement with that of the national average with 3.5 index point increment.   All regions reported an increase in the CPI compared to the last month’s record, Zamboanga Peninsula with the highest reported increment of 2.4 index points followed by Eastern Visayas with 1.4 index point increment. Both the National Capital Region and Cordillera Administrative Region recorded a slight increase in the CPI by 0.1 index point.     Figure 2. Purchasing Power of Peso, All Items, by Province in CALABARZON: December 2019 to January 2020 (2012=100) Purchasing Power of Peso (PPP) shows how much the peso in the base period is worth in another period. It gives an indication of the real value of the peso in a given period relative to the peso value in the base period. Purchasing Power of Peso is inversely related to inflation rate. Thus, as inflation rate increases, PPP declines.   In January 2020, the PPP in the region is at its second-month constant state at P0.83. This means that the value of P1.00 in 2012 is only worth P0.83 in January this year.   During the month, all provinces in the region had sustained their PPP from the previous month. The PPP in Laguna remains the strongest across provinces at P0.87. It was followed by Rizal Province at P0.83 and Batangas and Cavite both at P0.81. Quezon Province displayed the weakest PPP at P0.80 in January 2020.         CHARITO C. ARMONIA Regional Director   BFP/JAS
