Additionally, the inflation rate in April 2022 was lower at 4.7 percent (as shown in Figure 1). The year-on-year change in the average CPI for the first four months of the year was 7.5 percent (refer to Table A).   Table B. Year-on-Year Changes of the Consumer Price Index in Percent in Region IV-A (CALABARZON), by Commodity Group: Mar – Apr 2023 In Percent (2018=100) Source: Retail Price Survey of Commodities for the Generation of Consumer Price Index Philippine Statistics Authority   The decrease in the region’s inflation was mainly brought about by the lower annual increase in prices of housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels at 6.8 percent, compared to 8.7 percent in March. Also contributing to the downtrend in the overall inflation during the period were the lower annual increments in the indices of the following: Food and non-alcoholic beverages at 8.0 percent; and Transport at 3.7 percent. Meanwhile, higher annual increments were observed in the indices of the following commodity groups as compared to their previous month’s inflation rates: Alcoholic beverages  and tobacco at 13.5 percent; Clothing and footwear at 4.4 percent; Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance at 5.0 percent; Health at 4.1 percent; Recreation, sport, and culture at 4.1 percent; Restaurants and accommodation services at 6.7 percent; and Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services at 5.3 percent. The rest of the commodity groups either retained their previous month’s inflation rates or had zero percent annual growths. (Table B)   Table C. Year-on-Year Inflation Rates of Food Items in Region IVA (CALABARZON) (2018=100) Source: Retail Price Survey of Commodities for the Generation of Consumer Price Index Philippine Statistics Authority For food inflation, it decreased by 1.0 percent index point in April 2023, with 8.0 percent inflation compared to its previous month’s record of 9.0 percent but it is still higher than in April 2022 with inflation rate recorded at 2.7 percent (Table C). The inflation rate of the vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses index went down to 5.5 percent during the month, from 17.8 percent in the previous month. Moreover, food groups that exhibited lower annual increments during the month are the following: fish and other seafood at 8.8 percent; oils and fats at 3.7 percent; and sugar, confectionery and desserts at 31.6 percent. Meanwhile, food groups that registered acceleration in prices are the following: cereals and cereal products at 6.5 percent; fruits and nuts at 14.1 percent; and ready-made food and other food products n.e.c. at 8.7 percent. Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals and milk, other dairy products, and eggs commodity groups retained their previous month’s inflation rates. Rice index accelerated at 3.9 percent during the month while the corn index had lower annual uptick at 16.7 percent (Table C).   (SGD.) CHARITO C. ARMONIA Regional Director BFP/JAS
