The headline inflation in Lucena City continued its decrease as it moved down further to 4.2 percent in June 2023, from 5.2 percent in May 2023. The headline inflation in the city had a fourth consecutive month of deceleration and the lowest in the past 13 months. Moreover, the inflation in June 2023 was lower compared to June 2022 inflation which was recorded at 5.1 percent. The average inflation rate in Lucena City for the first semester of the year stood at 6.1 percent. The downtrend in the inflation rate of Lucena City was primarily due to the lower inflation rate in the heavily-weighted food and non-alcoholic beverages at 1.8 percent in June 2023, from 3.5 percent in the previous month. This was followed by transport at 6.4 percent, from 10.2 percent. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco was the third main source of deceleration of the inflation in June 2023 with 7.6 percent annual growth rate, from 9.3 percent in May 2023. Also contributing to the downtrend in the overall inflation during the period were the lower annual increments in the indices of the following commodity groups: a.Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels at 5.0 percent, from 5.2 percent; b.Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance at 1.2 percent, from 1.3 percent; c.Recreation, sport and culture at 2.6 percent, from 2.9 percent; and d.Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services at 3.3 percent, from 3.8 percent. Meanwhile, the following commodity groups retained their previous month’s inflation: a.Clothing and footwear at 2.4 percent; b.Health at 4.0 percent; c.Information and communication at 0.0 percent; d.Education services at 4.1 percent; e.Restaurants and accommodation services at 9.4 percent; and f.Financial services at 0.0 percent. Inflation for food in Lucena City decreased to 1.7 percent during the month, from 3.6 percent in May 2023. In June 2022, it stood at 3.8 percent. The deceleration in food inflation was primarily due to the annual decrement in the index of fish and other seafood recording an inflation rate of -4.7 percent, from 3.7 percent in May 2023. This was followed by fruits and nuts at 9.7 percent, from 19.2 percent; and meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals at -2.4 percent, from -1.0 percent. Likewise, the drop in the inflation rates during the month were observed in the following food groups: a.Corn at -8.1 percent, from 4.7 percent; b.Flour, bread and other bakery products, pasta products, and other cereals at 3.3 percent, from 3.9 percent; and c.Sugar, confectionery and desserts at 33.2 percent, from 33.8 percent. In contrast, the following food groups posted higher inflation rates during the month: a.Rice at 0.6 percent, from 0.4 percent; b.Milk, and other dairy products and eggs at 5.3, from 4.8 percent; c.Oils and fats at -0.6 percent, from -1.6 percent; d.Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses at 9.7 percent, from 6.0 percent; and e.Ready-made food and other food products not elsewhere classified at 5.9 percent, from 5.8 percent.
