PALAY Palay production in Laguna from January to March 2023 was recorded at 21,074 metric tons, indicating a decrease of -15.7 percent from the first quarter of the previous year’s output of 25,006 metric tons. On the other hand, harvest area increased to 4,621 hectares or 0.9 percent, from 4,581 hectares in the same period of the previous year. Yield per hectare was lower at 4.56 metric tons compared with the 5.46 metric tons yield in the same quarter of 2022. Figure 1. Palay Production, Harvest Area, and Yield per Hectare  Laguna, January to March: 2022 – 2023p       Palay production from irrigated areas contributed 93.7 percent to the total palay output in the first quarter of 2023, while the remaining 6.3 percent was produced from rainfed areas. Percent Shares of Irrigated and Rainfed Palay to Total Production Laguna, January to March: 2022 – 2023p   Palay production from irrigated areas increased its share by 0.2 percentage points, from the 93.5 percent share in the same quarter of 2022. In contrast, palay production from rainfed areas decreased its share to total palay output from the 6.5 percent share in the same period of the previous year. Table 1. Volume of Production for Palay, Laguna January to March: 2022 – 2023p Irrigated palay production was reported at 21,074 metric tons during the reference quarter. A decrease of -15.6 percent was noted relative to the irrigated palay production during the same quarter of the previous year. The rainfed palay registered 1,327 metric tons or -17.8 percent decline this January to March 2023, in comparison with the output of 1,614 metric tons in the same quarter of the previous year.   CORN The January to March 2023 corn production in Laguna was posted at 2,157 metric tons. This indicates an increase of 5.8 percent from the 2,039 metric tons production of the same quarter of the previous year. Likewise, harvest area increased to 552 hectares from the same quarter of the previous year’s area of 548 metric tons. Yield per hectare was also higher at 3.91 metric tons during the quarter compared with the 3.72 metric tons yield in the same period of 2022. Figure 3. Corn Production, Harvest Area, and Yield per Hectare Laguna, January to March: 2022 – 2023p   Of the total corn production, white corn accounted for 52.9 percent of the total corn output for this quarter, while the remaining 47.1 percent comprised the production of yellow corn. In contrast, yellow corn production increased its share to total corn output from the 44.3 percent share in the same period of the previous year. (Table 2) Table 2. Volume of Production for Corn, Laguna January – March: 2022 – 2023p Production of white corn was observed at 1,140 metric tons during the first quarter of 2023, indicating an increase of 0.4 percent. In the same quarter of the previous year, white corn production was estimated at 1,135 metric tons. In the first quarter of 2023, yellow corn production reached 1,017 metric tons.
